A life takeaway from online poker tournaments
On any given day, you may not be leading the pack.
You may be in the middle, or struggling to stay with it.
How you got there isn't important. Winning or losing, though, is up to you.
Not settling for scraps
I play microstakes sit-and-go poker tournaments.
“Jumpstart” 6-player tournaments have the top three players cash.
Often tight play by itself is enough to get third, and a smallish profit.
For quite a while, that was enough. After “cashing” I'd recklessly shove my chips — and usually exit quickly after that.
At some point, though, I decided to dig in and play to win, regardless of how far behind I was.
Tonight, for example, I was heads-up (myself and one other) but was behind quite a bit. I had fewer than 1,000 chips and my opponent had more than 8,000.
But as long as I had a chip and a chair, I wasn't out.
I ended up coming back to win. I got my buy-in back plus almost two more.
Make them tell you no.
Regardless of whether you think you're behind, or whether you actually are behind, you're not done until you're done.
If you give up, though, you are done.
Don't count yourself out.
