Five benefits I cherish in my monthly mastermind group

I’ve mentioned in passing that I’m part of a mastermind group. We’re a small but surly bunch (!) that hops on a Zoom meeting together in the evening once a month to check up, and check in, on our creative endeavors online.

I’ve been part of the group for nearly three years now. I had to look it up. I thought it was about two years. Time flies when you’re having fun!

We’ve seen members come and go, and we’ve had low points when none of us seemed to be motivated. But we persevered, and we’re still here.

Below are five of the benefits that I cherish the most being in this mastermind group.

Getting past roadblocks

If you create anything online of substance, you know that it’s hard work. What’s more, honing a particular craft, whether it’s writing, video, music, painting, or something else, gets technical.

And technology can be infuriating at times.

Our mastermind group helps each other navigate through these roadblocks (or if nothing else, offer a sympathetic ear!)

One of us recently had issues with getting a mailing list manager form running on a website. We tested it, looked over things, and otherwise poked around to help get it working again.

Firing up the idea factory

After having met for (what I believe to be) two years, we’ve gotten to know each other’s projects and what we hope to get out of them.

It’s energizing to meet and to be able to share ideas freely with one another. We don’t view each other as competitors. We treat our endeavors with an abundance mindset and offer different ways to go out and get what we want.

Our subject matter overlaps, but we embrace the niche of one and help each other find ways to get our unique stories heard so that we can help people for financial gain.

Encouraging one another

We spur each other along.

Over the past few months we’ve come to check in mid-month on a Facebook group chat. (Which I’m going to send a message on just as soon as I’m done with this article!) What usually follows is a productive conversation with a healthy dose of encouragement.

The primary reason for starting, joining, and participating in a mastermind group is personal growth. Growth is active and, to be blunt, a bit scary at times.

During the time I’ve been in the group, we’ve all tried things, publicly, that we’ve never done before. I’m convinced that we wouldn’t have done half the things we’ve done if we hadn’t cheered each other on.

Supporting one another

With a small group, it’s kind of a no-brainer to support each other’s work online:

  • Subscribing to an email list
  • Subscribing to a video channel or watching a video
  • Commenting on a blog post
  • Reviewing video footage
  • Checking out a webpage

People in the mastermind group are VIPs. They get their requests for support answered first.

Friendship

This has nothing directly to do with the purpose of the mastermind group, but it sure is nice, isn’t it?

Now that I’m well into middle age, friends are much harder to come by.

I connect with the people on this mastermind group more so than most of the people I interact with in person day to day.

I even took the plunge to go to a money conference I hadn’t gone to in six years just to meet up with members of the group.

Maybe friendship is the greatest benefit of a monthly mastermind group that isn’t talked about?
