I challenge you to find a simpler process
Accountability is a key benefit of working in a mastermind group. Like-minded people supporting each other in a common endeavor need others to keep on track.
I'm part of a online-business mastermind group, and we saw the need to check in more regularly than once a month on our progress.
We've tried different ways to stay in touch in the space between our monthly video meetings, but tonight we hit on something that is so simple, it just might work!
Here's how we're going to keep the pressure on ourselves to make time for what we want to do.
1. Create and use a group chat
We use Facebook Messenger but it can be a group chat on cell phones.
Group chats are easy, usually free, and immediate.
2. Message the group what we'll do in the next week
We chose a week because we meet monthly.
A week gives us enough leeway to schedule our work. It's not a huge amount of work to schedule.
Most importantly, it's a short enough time that the entire month isn't shot if we miss a bit.
3. Check in the following week to see how we're doing
One of us will take point on checking in with the group via … a message to the group chat.
(See how easy that is?)
In there we can encourage one another, offer advice to get on track, or plan out the next steps.
4. Repeat 1-3 until the next live meeting
We then drop the next week of what we'll work on in the group chat, and repeat until we hit Google Meet again.
A few ground rules for using this group chat
The mechanics are easy, aren't they? These guidelines will make the process even more effective.
Keep the noise low and the signal high
If there's too much chatter in the group chat, then it dilutes the effectiveness of the messages that need to get through. Keeping the chats in the group limited to the mastermind activity, and particularly the in-between check-ins, will increase their importance. Also, the group will look forward to those messages.
Be responsive in the group chat
Just like there should be good participation in the live meetings, there should be responsiveness in the group chat. Get back to requests in a reasonable time and prioritize checking in and helping the other members.
Be unfailingly encouraging
This is another way to make those messages something to look forward to. A mastermind group should be a source of support and encouragement. Make it so!
