Quitting Your Job Isn’t the Only Goal

Another (better?) goal amounts to the same thing but without the adrenaline.

You don't have to look far on Medium to find articles on becoming your own boss.

Some creators call themselves unemployable, which is right in line with this.

Others, though, make working alongside a nine-to-five a pillar of their online business.

(And that's actually fine. Both ways contribute to a niche of one in their own right and position well with a vibrant, responsive audience.)

Either way, it's a personal choice.

Because of where I am in my career and in my online business, it would be foolish of me to quit.

I'm content finishing out my career (which I can retire from with full benefits in a little over six years). For now, working to make money by writing online levels out some of the bad days at work, since I know I'm taking steps to build something independent of that job.

I'm not going to hang my head if I retire on time, or even stay on a little longer. Being my own boss isn't a driver.

It kinda terrifies me, actually.

But this goal is much the same thing, minus the terror.

The one thing that would do the most to relieve any job-related stress whatsoever is to be able to quit.

Not that I would need to quit, or even that I would want to quit.

Just knowing that I could walk away from that job, regain 40 hours a week, and not have everything collapse around me would put a spring in my step for every single one of those 40 hours that I am at work.

I'd know that I wasn't trapped anymore in needing the job to support my family and my obligations.

Life after that job wouldn't be adjustment-free, of course, but it would lack most of the fight-or-flight of putting things together quickly to make ends meet. Less drama is good.
